A 32 year old Watertown man is in the Jefferson County Jail on a charge of criminal possession of stolen property 5th degree. Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies report that Joseph Barney was charged Tuesday evening following a traffic stop on Line School Road in the town of Champion with allegedly possessing a title to a pickup truck which was reported stolen out of Oneida County. Barney was arraigned in Rutland Town Court and remanded to the Jefferson County Jail on $5,000 cash bail.
Three Carthage men face burglary charges after allegedly being caught stealing electrical wire from the closed Deferiet paper mill.
New York State police arrested 33 year old Kevin Come, Jr., 30 year old Andrew LaFave and 43 year old Scott Honness after they received a report about a suspicious vehicle near the site of the old Champion Paper Mill on Wednesday. The responding trooper located the three suspects inside - allegedly removing electrical wire.
Each was charged with a felony count of third-degree burglary. Honness was additionally charged with unlawful possession of marijuana after he was allegedly found in possession of a smoking pipe containing marijuana residue.
All three men were arraigned in Carthage Village Court. Honness and Come were released on their own recognizance. LaFave was remanded to the Jefferson County Public Safety Building Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail.
The NY State Police were assisted at the scene by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and the Black River/Evans Mills Police Department.
The New York Snowmobiling Associate has released a study about the impact of the sport. They reported yesterday that Snowmobiling has an economic impact of $868 million statewide, with $163 million in the Central New York region that includes Oneida County, $245 million in the Adirondacks and $165 million in the Tug Hill Region.
The study of the 2010-11 winter season was generated from a survey sent last November to snowmobilers based on statewide registrations.. Nearly 6,000 snowmobilers responded to the random survey that was conducted by the SUNY Potsdam Institute for Applied Research.
Economic impact factors in the study include how much snowmobilers spent on their machines and related equipment as well as spending at restaurants, convenience stores and gas pumps that are near snowmobile trails; "multiplier" formulas help determine spinoff effects of money spent.
The survey was a follow-up to a 1998 study. D.r J Patrick Turbett, director of the SUNY Potsdam Institute of Applied Research sad that the survey indicated that "even after adjusting for cost of living and other factors, snowmobiling has been a growing activity during the last decade with significant economic impact for New York State.
Time Warner Cable internet customers will see an extra charge on their bills next month. Beginning on November 1, Time Warner customers can either purchase their own cable internet modem or continue to lease the modem provided by Time Warner for a fee of $3.95 per month. A Time-Warner Spokesperson stated that customers who choose to purchase their own modem should check a list of approved modems for their specific tier of Internet service. Local Police department members along with County Sheriff’s office, State Police and Ft Drum Military Police attend a workshop to help combat and prevent synthetic drug usage around the state hosted by the Oneida Nation Police Force.
The goal of the workshop was to get every agency on the same page about how to respond to the problems and health risks caused by synthetic drugs, such as bath salts. They also stress the importance of approaching the user in the safest way possible. Police were also trained how to safely handle users so that they do not die in custody.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer warns that milk prices in stores across New York could double if the Farm Bill isn't renewed. Schumer says the nation will start to revert to 1940s era agriculture policy if a new Farm Bill isn't passed soon. The National Milk Producers Federation says government purchases of dairy products under the outdated law could cause milk prices to rise above $6 per gallon. The Farm Bill is enacted every five to seven years and provides farm and food policy for America. The 2012 Farm Bill passed the Senate on June 21 by a bipartisan vote of 64 to 35, but it remains stalled in the House of Representatives. The 2008 Farm Bill expired on September 30th.
Congressman Bill Owens and Congressman Reid Ribble of Wisconsin led a bi-partisan group of colleagues in writing to U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk calling for Canadian tariffs against U.S. dairy and poultry products to be eliminated as part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is a proposed trade deal. Virtually all U.S. dairy and poultry products were excluded from the U.S.-Canada portion of NAFTA. Despite Canada's restrictions on imported dairy products, it remains the United States' second largest export market, totaling $443 million in 2011. The letter also urges the Administration to reach an agreement that strengthens and reinforces the World Trade Organization's sanitary measures by including safety measures based on sound, objective science. Agricultural producers, processors and exporters have for years complained about non-tariff restrictions from other countries that are not science-based. Earlier this year, Congressman Owens applauded Canada's invitation to join the negotiations. Last year alone, Canada imported more than $280.9 billion in U.S. goods
