Carthage man charged with DWI

A 61 year old Carthage man was charged by Jefferson County Sheriffs deputies numerous violations after he was pulled over Thursday afternoon on Bridge Street in West Carthage. Deputies report that Gregory M. Mower of Rt 26 was observed speeding on Rt 26. After the deputy activated his patrol car's emergency lights, Mr. Maurer pulled onto the shoulder but kept driving at 35 mph half on the shoulder and half in the driving lane, according to police papers. Maurer then put his hand out his window and motioned for the deputy to pass him and continued driving at between 35 and 45 mph on the shoulder until reaching McDonald's where he immediately jumped out of his vehicle and walked towards the restaurant where he was arrested after being allowed to use the restroom. At that time a strong odor of alcohol was detected deputies said. He refused to submit to a breath test. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, speeding 72 mph in a 55-mph zone, refusal to take a breath test, driving across a hazard marking, improper passing and failure to comply. He was previously convicted of driving while ability impaired in Jan. of 2009, deputies said. Maurer is summoned to appear Nov. 8 in Champion Town Court.
