Snowmobiling Impact

The New York Snowmobiling Associate has released a study about the impact of the sport. They
reported yesterday that Snowmobiling has an economic impact of $868 million statewide, with $163 million in the Central New York region that includes Oneida County, $245 million in the Adirondacks and $165 million in the Tug Hill
Region.

The study of the 2010-11 winter season was generated from a survey sent last November to snowmobilers based on statewide registrations.. Nearly 6,000 snowmobilers responded to the random survey that was conducted by the SUNY Potsdam Institute for Applied Research.

Economic impact factors in the study include how much snowmobilers spent on their machines and
related equipment as well as  spending at restaurants, convenience stores and gas pumps that are near snowmobile trails; "multiplier" formulas help determine spinoff effects of money spent.

The survey was a follow-up to a 1998 study.  D.r J Patrick Turbett, director of the SUNY Potsdam Institute of Applied Research sad that the survey  indicated that "even after adjusting for cost of living and other factors, snowmobiling has been a growing activity during the last decade with significant economic impact for New York State.
