Disposal site on Fort Drum not a health risk

on Saturday, 06 October 2012.

Soldiers and the public are not at risk following an update about a Fort Drum disposal site first used in the 1940s and the post's Gasoline Alley area.  The DEC issued a public notice about the 203-acre site, which is located on the corner of post near Oneida Avenue and Great Bend Road.  The redefined listing will include two areas: the old sanitary landfill, which was sealed to DEC standards in 2008 & another spot that is being investigated for both
groundwater and soil vapor contamination.  A State Health Department Spokesperson stated that the site does not pose any health risk for the surrounding public.  Management of the site is being returned to
the state Superfund Program, which labels and cleans sites where significant
amounts of waste may be.
