October is National Fire Prevention Month with this week
being designated as Fire Prevention Week.
According to the United States Fire Administration 81% of all deaths and
76% of all fire injuries occurred in homes.
Each year there are an estimated 365,000 fires which claim the lives of
2,560 and injure another 13, 275. These
fires cost an estimated 6.6 billion in property loss. Smoke detectors on every level of your home
increase your chance of survival. You
should also always have two ways out in order to help you survive in a fire
emergency. Create an escape plan and
make sure everyone in your home practices it.
Plan two routes of escape and designate a meeting place outside of the
home and NEVER go back inside. Check
smoke detectors often and change your batteries when you change your clocks in
the spring and fall. Smoking is the
number one cause of home fire deaths in the US.
Make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished and run cigarette ashes
and butts under water before throwing them away. For more information on fire safety visit www.nfpa.org.
