CASTORLAND- Floyd E. Zehr, 93, of Swiss Road, died Wednesday evening at his home.
A graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Croghan Mennonite Cemetery. A memorial service will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Croghan Mennonite Church, with a luncheon to follow the memorial service in the church fellowship hall, all are welcome. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Brook Haven House, 423 State Street, Carthage, NY 13367.
He is survived by his three sons, Arthur S. Zehr of Flint, Michigan, Carlton F. Zehr and his companion, Mary Young of Carthage, Francis E. and Karen Zehr of Ridgeway, VA; two brothers, Donald P. and Jean Zehr of Pennsylvania, Levi C. and Florence Zehr of Castorland; four sisters, Pauline Zehr of Castorland, Maxine and Elton Moser of Copenhagen, Marie and David Yousey of Castorland, Lucille Zehr of Seattle, Washington; eight grandchildren, Starla and Duane Koehler, Kelson Zehr, Jason and Barbara Zehr, and their children, Emily, Katie, and Lane Zehr, Stephanie and Scott Baxter and their children, Matthew and Catherine Monaghan, Andrea and John Waters, and their children, Cooper and Claire Waters, Tonia and Cary Miller, and their children, Carson and Maycie Miller, Ryan Zehr, Kyle and Jessica Zehr; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his wife, Laura L. Zehr, who died on July 14, 1993; three sisters, Luella Martin, Eunice Jantzi; and Edith Zehr, who died as a child.
Floyd was born on September 14, 1919 in the Town of New Bremen, NY, a son of the late Christian and Martha Moser Zehr. He attended Beaver Falls High School and worked in the woods, peeling pulp for Lyndaker Logging before his marriage. On August 27, 1941, he married Laura Steria at the Croghan Mennonite Church with Bishop Jake Gingerich officiating. He worked for J.P. Lewis , later named Latex Fiber & Boise Cascade as a machine operator for 32 years, retiring in 1983. He was well known for repairing balers throughout the county for many years. He enjoyed helping in his family’s maple sugar business and also enjoyed hunting deer. Years ago, Floyd was a manager for a softball team with the Lewis County League. He was a Boston Red Sox fan and a great story teller.
