George Pickard

May 5, 1920 to September 6, 2010

Boonville—George Pickard, 90, of Kortenaer Village and a Veteran of WWII passed away into the arms of his lord and savior on September 6, 2010 at Bethany Gardens, Rome with his son by his side.

He was born in Rome on May 5, 1920 a son of Fayette A. and Helen L. Tibbets Pickard. He attended Rome schools graduating from Rome Free Academy in 1939. While in school he worked for Western Union and after high school he attended Rome Trade School taking a machine shop course. He was also employed by General Cable, Spargo Wire, Coccia Bros. and Woods Valley Ski Area in Westernville. In 1941 he became employed by Rome Army Air Field and was sent to Middletown PA for training on aircrafts. In 1942 George entered the Army Air Force serving for three and a half years. He served in the states and in the North African Theater. After being honorably discharged he was employed by Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome as an air craft Mechanic. He worked there from 1946-1970 when he retired. 

In 1970 he was united in marriage to Velma Williamson in Ava. The couple lived on Woodgate Drive until 1988 when they moved to Kortenaer Village. Velma died on February 5, 2009.
Surviving is one son Stephen R. Pickard from a previous marriage; one sister Cora Meiss, Rome; three step children Penny and David Yager, Boonville; Donna and Rodney Studer, Vernon; Gerald and Dorothy Payanoff, Forestport; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, also many friends who dearly loved him. He is predeceased by his wife Velma; two sisters Harriet Seidel; Helen Berg; one brother Robert Pickard. George will be greatly missed.

A Graveside service will be held Friday September 10 2010 at 1pm at Boonville Cemetery with Rev. William Mudge Officiating and full military honors. There are no calling hours. 

Mills Funeral Home 301 Post Street is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Boonville Ambulance Fund or Boonville Vol. Fire Co.

Harold D. Smith

October 20, 1948 to September 2, 2010

LOWVILLE – Harold D. Smith, 61, Lebanon, PA, formerly of Lowville, died of lung cancer on September 2, 2010 under the care of Veterans Hospice.

The funeral with military honors was held on September 7, 2010 in Lebanon, PA . Burial followed in Gap National Cemetery, Lebanon County, PA. Funeral arrangements are with Thompson Funeral Home, Lebanon, PA.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Smith; two step-children, two brothers, Jerome Smith of Corning, NY; Robert Smith of Utica, NY; two sisters, Dianne Cannan of Watson, and Marie Morley of Gloversville, NY; three half brothers, Paul and Audrey Smith of Watson, Walter Smith and his companion, Judy Orendorf, of Watson, and Frederick and Patsy Smith of Denmark; two half sisters; Rosie Brower of Texas and Pauline Smith of Hammond, NY; an adopted brother, Douglas McLane of Deer River; a niece and her husband, Jennifer Ann and John Sweeney, Lowville, NY; a great-nephew Matthew Chase Sweeney of Lowville, NY; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by a step-child, a brother, Duane D. Smith, who died on November 8, 2007, a nephew, Corporal Kelly Matthew Cannan, a United States Marine who was killed in action in Iraq on April 20, 2005.

Mr. Smith was born on October 20, 1948 in Lowville, a son of the late Aloysius and Lorena E. Seelman Smith. He graduated from St. Peter’s School and Lowville Academy and Central School in 1967. He worked on the family farm in his younger years, and later lived with the Grace and Ray Archer family in West Martinsburg. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart.

As a young man, he was a communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville.

Peter Briggs

October 21, 1913 to September 4, 2010

Remsen—Peter Briggs, 96, of Bardwell Mills Road passed away on September 4, 2010 at St. Luke’s Home, New Hartford.

He was born on October 21, 1913 in the town of Russia a son of William and Charlotte Wandover Briggs and grew up in Wheelertown attending rural schools. On January 13, 1938 in Remsen he married Mabel L. Allen. She died on December 29, 2006. Peter served in the U.S. Army from March of 1943 till January of 1946. He was a Hunting Guide in the Foothills of the Adirondacks for many years and employed with Credle Equipment of Schuyler/Utica where he was a Mechanic and Shop Foreman for 22 years. Peter was an avid outdoorsman.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Paul Wojcik, Utica; one sister Freida Massena, Florida; five grandchildren Reggie, Randy, Steve, Bonnie and Mike; special great-grandson Peter Broadbent and several other great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers George Briggs and Art Allen; two sisters Edna Leon; Edith Bronson; one half sister Katherine Rundel.
The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Home and Dr. Bruce Elwell, Carol Worden, Arthur Johnson and Lonny Wandover for their care given to Peter.

A Funeral Service will be 10:30 AM Wednesday September 8 at the Ackley-Mills Funeral Home 9597 Main Street Remsen. Interment in Fairchild Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 5-8pm at the Funeral Home.

Frank J. Benz

May 27, 1956 to September 1, 2010

White Lake - Frank J. Benz, 54, husband of Catherine (Rodzinski) Benz, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Rome Memorial Hospital. A native of Syracuse, he was born on May 27, 1956, grew up in the Phoenix area, and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Benz is survived by three sons, Frank J. Benz II of Englewood, FL, Joe Benz of Old Forge, and Matt Benz, a student at SUNY Potsdam; five grandchildren; and one brother, Steve of Mattydale.

Visitation will be at the convenience of his family. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., Boonville, NY.

Thomas L. Milstead III

November 19, 1936 to September 1, 2010

TURIN – Thomas L. Milstead III, 73, of the Brick Block, East Main Street, Turin, died September 1, 2010 at Lewis County General Hospital.

A graveside service will be held at 3 pm. on Friday, September 3, 2010 at Turin Cemetery with a memorial service to be held at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society of the Turin Volunteer Fire Co., Turin, NY 13473.

Mr. Milstead was born in Pleasantville, N.J. on November 19, 1936, a son of the late Thomas and Caroline Milstead. He graduated from the University of Alabama and worked for The Curtis Publishing Company and was an account manager for the Enquirer.
Tom owned and operated the popular “Easy Street” Restaurant at the Brick Block in Turin during the late 1970’s.

Tom was a pre-Vietnam Army Veteran, stationed at Ft. Dix, N.J. in the infantry. He was an accomplished golfer and enjoyed playing at the Turin Highlands Golf Course for many years and held the course record at one time. He was also an avid skier.
